CP 2.63 63. Surely logic must begin with a critic of knowledge. That cannot be denied; for what prudent man would embark on any enterprise without first considering whether and how it could possibly succeed? Nor can it be denied that the theory of cognition is today one of the pearls of scientific psychology. But I contend that that propedeutic that is wanted for logic has no more to do with the psychological theory of cognition than logic itself is concerned with the psychical process of thinking. Even less were there room for less; since the psychological theory substantially ends where consciously controlled thought begins, with which alone logic has even an indirect connection. END

When Peirce says critic he means critique or analysis.

Peirce believes that psychology does not mix with consciousness. Clearly a further inquiry will be made trying to limn Peirce's understanding of consciousness. I think it squares essentially with my own. But in one sense both may still be under construction.

In this squib Peirce makes it clear that conscious control relates to the psychic as does as does logic. Indeed thinking itself is seen as a psychical process. Such contentions make me more and more convinced that some advocates of meditation stray from veracity when they tall us that our mind is merely a parade of things that distract us from attaining a state of bliss or joy or love -- a level of sensed being. The mind is not to be viewed pejoratively. It is to be seen as what it is. The basis of conscious consideration of matters, of ethics and aesthetics and spiritual guidance.
